James Gunn has reportedly injected some of his trademark humour into Superman: Legacy.
Following the restructuring of DC Studios at the creative and executive level, any plans for Man of Steel star Henry Cavill to return as Superman were scrapped despite his cameo appearance at the end of Black Adam.
Gunn was appointed writer-director and David Corenswet was eventually cast for a fresh take on Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan joining as Lois Lane.
The official premise of Superman: Legacy reads:
'Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.'
Cavill certainly played a darker version of Superman in Man of Steel and subsequent movies in the DCEU, a sacrificial hero, but Brosnahan says Legacy will be lighter in tone.
“I’ve really enjoyed the collaboration with James Gunn so far," the actress told Entertainment Tonight.
"Every single person involved in this production is such a perfect nerd for Superman. We all grew up watching the movies, some of us grew up reading the comics, and so I feel like it’s being made with so much love. And I think this Superman’ll have a sense of humor without getting into spoilers."
In all of Gunn's comic book projects so far, like Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad, humour was a big reason for their respective successes.
Who stars in Superman: Legacy?
Corenswet will play Superman, with Brosnahan playing Lane.
It was recently confirmed by Gunn that Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor.
“Yes, finally I can answer, Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy and I couldn’t be happier,” he stated on Instagram.
“We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. Although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain.
“Here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my very favourite characters in the DCU.”
