Basquiat plot

"In 1981, a nineteen-year-old unknown graffiti writer took the New York art world by storm. The rest is art history."

After his discovery, the young graffiti artist Jean Michel Basquiat is immediately labeled as one of the greatest talents of the New York art scene. He joins the small circle of confidants around Andy Warhol. His paintings are popular with major museums and art collectors, and the media is pouring themselves into the first black artist to succeed in the mainly white-dominated art world. But as his star continues to rise, Basquiat continues to bend under the yoke of his own success. His life takes a fatal turn when he seeks refuge in the use of alcohol and drugs.

I found the story told very dryly and Jeffrey Wright's role could hardly captivate me. On the other hand, the film is chock full of nice roles. Gary Oldman as an artist, Benicio Del Toro as an idiot friend, Dennis Hopper as..., well, just Dennis Hopper. The role that makes this film absolutely worth watching is really that of David Bowie as Andy Warhol. The film meanders a bit but remains excellent entertainment due to the nice roles of these top actors (and good music).

Your audience isn't even born yet.

Above average movie for in between. Not as intense, audiovisually idiosyncratic or in any way impressive as Schnabel's Butterfly, but still beautiful and just plain good. So it's easy to watch, but in a way it is inspiring. I always find it nice to take a look at the art world through films, it is therefore also nice here that the art and also the process, is filmed well so that more experience can be seen. I do not know the art itself of Basquiat, and I found also not that special. Maybe it was because the urge and the artistry in this film left me a bit cold, as a film it is at least fun.

The film is simply entertaining on every level, especially the music was really well chosen, but the rest was just sufficient. It was more the relaxed atmosphere that makes the film so good and easy to watch. Because it is never sentimental or cheap you do feel like a serious viewer and that is reassuring.

Just a good movie that is easy to watch, too bad Schnabel didn't make a work of art of it himself, but still enjoyable. 3.5 stars
