8 Femmes plot

"Living in a house full of women can be murder"

The fifties. An isolated country house in the snowy countryside of France. A family has gathered to spend the holidays together. But it will not be very pleasant: the master of the house has been murdered! One of the eight women in the victim's immediate vicinity must have been responsible for the murder. When the victim's sister - a real vamp - shows up unexpectedly at the door, the murder investigation degenerates into a day full of startling revelations, the necessary entanglements and even musical interludes. Comedic situations take a different turn as dark family secrets surface. Seduction dances with betrayal. The mystery of the female psyche is revealed...

This was also a review for me. I do remember reading the rave reviews in the newspaper; Then when I saw the film a few years later, it was a bit disappointing. The experience is not much different now.

It's set in the 50s, and it also looks like it was filmed in the 50s, by which I mean it has the same vibe as a 50s movie, not so much because of the setting. Not really a big fan of movies from that time, so not really a plus.

Furthermore, it's clear that this is based on a play, given that it's set in one location and it's mostly about the acting. That's a joy to see with all the glitter. Each character manipulates it into a delight, with a fake grin one is sucking, and the biggest revelations are made about others. Or sometimes seemingly very casually but oh so precisely placed. In any case, it was perfectly conveyed; an excellent cast. I thought the eldest daughter played by Ledoyen looked a bit like a cross between Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Portman.

The songs are a bit sad. Sometimes they are not about anything, are not too strong and often not too well sung. Only Grandma Darrieux rose above it, despite the fact that her voice was not too stable anymore due to old age. Which by the way didn't bother me, because you really get the idea that she comes from a generation where an actress should also be able to sing.

Acting definitely good for 3*. After half a deduction for the songs I arrive at 2.5 *.

A special French film. Fun with the music and the mystery. I didn't mind the singing, the film looked very pleasant and I like the acting. It gave me a theater feeling, which I find positive and appropriate for this film. Beautifully and colorfully portrayed, and nice characters. 4.5*

Robert Thomas' play was a great success in 1957, the first film adaptation "La Nuit des Suspectes" a few years ago was much less popular.

Ozon's film adaptation seems to do that much more in its imaginative, varied and musical execution, aided by a bunch of top-notch actresses.

A whodonit that briefly reminds of an Agatha Christie theme, but with a thick line of playful humor through it.

Once up to speed, one surprise after another invades the room where the entire piece takes place. There is always someone speaking who seems to lift something from the mystery veil and always someone seems suspicious because the past is not left untouched. All this in dialogues sometimes encouraging, usually sharply accusing and interspersed with vocal interludes, which were very much appreciated lyrically and appropriate for each of the characters.

Not to be missed if you like relaxing and playful drama and some suspense.
