Absolutely Anything plot

"Great power. Total irresponsibility."

Neil Clarke, a teacher, suddenly discovers that he has magical powers. In fact, with a flick of his hand, he can make anything happen. From wiping out an annoying class (and bringing them back to life), to turning his best friend into the type of woman anyone would adore. The only problem, however, is finding the right words and finding out what he really wants.

Bit of weak comedy. Often very lame and many jokes are not well worked out. Simon Pegg is often funny, but often not. Special effects are often mediocre.

Absolutely Anything

Phew, that wasn't too good. The whole thing about someone being given divine gifts and being able to do and get what they want is nice in itself but the execution leaves much to be desired. A movie like Bruce Almighty had a bit of the same concept, but where everything fell exactly into place, in Absolutely Anything everything goes wrong.

Of course Neil uses his gift for his own gain, but it is all so uninspiring and childish that there is little to laugh about. The strange creatures that want to see if humanity can still be saved (or something like that) look ridiculous and might as well have been deleted. Pegg can do better than this and so can Riggle and Beckinsale. Beckinsale is beautiful and also an excellent actress but she really needs to learn how to make better movie choices. In any case, forget this movie as soon as possible.

Pretty nice.

Contentless film purely aimed at providing entertainment. Terry Jones has a broad background in the entertainment industry, which makes movies like Absolutely Anything seem like a cash-in. He seems to be well aware of this, because the names that play a part in this are not exactly unknown and the production looks quite expensive.

Unfortunately, there is not much of that Monty Python creativity left, maybe those crazy ideas came from Terry Gilliam after all. The concept gives room for many fun concepts, but the film never goes into that high gear. Visually also just a bit too easy. Take, for example, the design of the aliens. Still a bit bland, although it fits the tone.

It's a bit of a lame criticism of a film that otherwise looks nice and that I could laugh about sometimes. Pegg fits right into this project. Beckinsale is a bit more bare-bones, but also easily compliant and Riggle is a comedic supporting actor. Luckily he isn't around too much, otherwise his eccentric behavior would have completely taken over the film. Absolutely Anything is not high quality or intelligent, but quite decent entertainment that doesn't ramble on for too long.
