Coffee and Cigarettes plot

Jim Jarmusch started 'Coffee and Cigarettes' in 1986 as a 6 minute improv between Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni. Two people meet in a coffee bar to drink, smoke and chat. Several years later, Jarmusch made another version, known as the 'Memphis version', in which Steve Buscemi is a waiter and Joie Lee and Cinqué Lee are the customers drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. Over the years Jarmusch has continued to make this kind of recording and that has now become this film.

The idea is good to portray the same concept over and over again. It makes for some nice scenes. There are some good moments with a cast like this. But the content is also nothing more than a bit of philosophizing about… yes: coffee and cigarettes. The end is starting to get a bit boring. I would also have liked to have seen a little more than a standard compilation. Blending of images, mixing scenes, unexpected shots, ... The film has its charms, but the result is better on paper than on canvas.

Very enjoyable slide film in which it is not only about coffee and cigarettes, but in which many human traits are examined such as willful unkindness, selfishness, superficiality, boredom, indifference...and what struck me most in the sketch with Cate Blanchett - the best thing in my opinion - is that nothing can match jealousy, not even heal it at all.

The presence of a Benigni was also quite nice and especially this one by Vinny Vella - one of those guys from "The Sopranos" - was appreciated.

Original, clever by Jarmusch.

A very fine movie. I like the short pieces. Sometimes I find it difficult to focus on a movie with one long story, and then these kinds of movies are a godsend. Well acted. Cate Blanchett in particular stands out for me. Sometimes it's very funny, the word comedy fits, and I like the music. I find some conversations more interesting than others, but that's okay. It doesn't have to be all that impressive to me. Lovingly made. More than enough. 4*
