The Prince of Zamunda is said to have a son in America. Akeem returns to the US with Semmi to investigate. Of course he would like to know whether this crown prince really belongs to the royal family of Zamunda. But unfortunately everything doesn't go as planned.

Good smile.
Coming to America may not have been Eddie Murphy's funniest or best movie, but it was a very likeable one. And also one of the most successful at the box office. There might not have been a real laugh, but the naive African prince and his spoiled assistant knew how to put a good smile on their face. No hilarious situations, just feel good and chuckling. And there wasn't much wrong with that. Although a really foul-mouthed and pedantic Murphy in the lead role was secretly missed a bit, Coming to America had its charms.
Now, more than 30 years later, it seems as if time has stood still. Without John Landis, but apparently somewhere with the legendary Rick Baker on board, almost all characters once again make an appearance. Although older, thicker and grayer in many cases, everything has been done to disguise this as much as possible. Nothing human is alien to Zamunda's court. Some characters don't even seem to age a day. That is not possible, because otherwise everyone in the barbershop would be dead, for example. Nice to know that James Earl Jones is still alive.
In terms of locations, people mainly stay in the palace and a lot is supplemented with green screens, something that makes the viewing a lot less authentic. A disadvantage compared to the film from 88. The jokes are often of the same level, something that has lost some of its power these days. Still, it's nice to see the characters again. Although the fun is mainly in the recognition and added musical-like parts. Not so much in the humor. And that, after all, is part of a comedy. To admit; Wesley Snipes makes up for a little, but not enough.

Oh my... I think I can already call Coming 2 America the disappointment of 2021. What a bad product this has become! Eddie Murphy, as usual for the last two decades, is completely uninspired, save for a few moments at the My-T-Sharp barbershop and his performance as Randy 'Sexual Chocolate' Watson. These scenes don't come close to the original, but there was a little bit of nostalgia bubbling up.
The biggest problem with Coming 2 America is the terrible style. The film looks cheap and reminds more of a series than a sequel to a big Hollywood hit. I sometimes miss 35mm... The soundtrack is on the same level and the writing is the same. For a movie called Coming 2 America, very little time is spent in the US.
The new cast members are all not acquisitions. Jermaine Fowler as the new prince is a generic addition. The more famous Tracy Morgan and Leslie Jones also know nothing to bring. Wesley Snipes has his moments, but we prefer to see him pop in an action movie.
It is especially fond of old glories. Many actors from the original can also be seen here. That's fun for a while, but Coming 2 America as a whole has turned out to be quite a failure and above all a completely unnecessary sequel.

what a rape of the original! once again clear that Eddy Murphy is not what it used to be. A useless sequel and a waste of time. They had 30 years to make an original script but just redone the first film with the end result that the first film was tasteful and original (just think of the characters that Hall and Murphy played) but now it was just a decoction, bad and not funny.
