A brilliant cast makes off with a delightfully idiotic script and the result is a delight from start to finish. Spencer Tracy plays Warren Haggerty, a journalist who desperately tries to prevent the rich and famous Connie Allenbury [Myrna Loy] from filing a lawsuit that could destroy his newspaper. Warren comes up with the foolish idea of having his impatient fiancée Gladys Benton [Jean Harlow] pretend that she is married to the charming and smooth Bill Chandler [William Powell], in the hope that he can ensure that the (incorrect) ) story for which his newspaper has been sued still becomes true... or something like that. Oh well, the story doesn't matter much then, because in the end it's just a fantastic excuse for hilarious one-liners ("She may be his wife, but she's my fiancee!") and many comedic twists. The sparks especially fly from the screen when Jean Harlow and William Powell - who ended their marriage a few years earlier - have to pretend to be married. Tracy and Loy hold their own well in roles that are less flamboyant. EE Clive is great as the fishing instructor and Walter Connolly is extremely entertaining as Connie's father, a keen fisherman who Bill desperately tries to impress even though he has never touched a fishing rod! Indeed, the screenplay also provides a host of hilarious supporting roles, making this a wonderful screwball comedy that you should definitely not miss.

Very nice feel-good film where not only the duo Powell and Loy carry the film, but this time they are also assisted by the talented Tracy and Harlow, who unfortunately died much too young. It is clear that the actors clearly enjoyed it and played well together.

Myrna Loy was truly a beautiful woman and her role as a "spicy aunt" doesn't make her any less sexy. ?

In any case, Libeled Lady is very pleasant entertainment and also looks great.

3.5*

Powell is on a roll, and so is Tracy, but I expected a little more from this comedy.
