Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life plot

"Rules aren't for everyone."

Rafe Katchadorian is a somewhat withdrawn teenager who fantasizes wildly. He is very disappointed with school and the associated rules. Rafe and his best friend Leo come up with a plan to break every rule in the school textbook. But that, of course, poses quite a few problems.

Pleasant surprise, the film has more content than you expect at first glance. The comedy part consists of the pranks that the 'two' wayward boys play to break all the rules. Of course with a funny but incredibly cliché headmaster who thinks he is a ruler.

The 'deeper layer' that the film has is shown very subtly. First of all, Rafe comes from a family where there is sadness and has a stepfather who tries to make life difficult for him and his sister. This is partly treated humorously, but the dramatic scenes are also of a high level for just a simple comedy.

In addition, criticism is expressed, whether consciously or not, on certain aspects of contemporary education, something that really appealed to me as someone involved in education.

In addition, there are the cartoons, which run like a common thread through Rafe's life and the film. The cartoons are very entertaining, they definitely add value.

As for the acting, I have little to report, very average and decent.

“Let's stop the suck!”

Nice coming of age film that tackles the original and is never boring for a moment. It's hard to come up with anything new when it comes to the teen genre, but Middle School goes a long way with a combination of humor, some drama and funny gimmicks such as the cartoons/animation. Everything is magnified and it is not at all realistic, but that is also the great strength of the film. And in the moments when Middle School wants to take a serious tone, it succeeds, aided by excellent acting and strong direction.

Slightly better than expected, not just a "bland" coming of age but definitely profound. At first glance it all looks well-behaved and that is why I think the dramatic developments work better and make more of an impression. The acting level of the children was also more than excellent and the relatively short playing time makes it enjoyable to watch.

In itself, Netflix could make more of these types of "Diary of a wimpy kid" films.

3*
