Good film about a psychologist who wants to help a patient with gambling debts. Although the plot is certainly well put together, there is also a certain predictability to the whole. But the scenes and especially the dialogues are just good and the film also breathes the right atmosphere. Just 3.5 stars for this directorial debut by David Mamet.

Fine film about a psychologist who is drawn to the world of fraud; but she immediately discovers the dark side of herself. House of Games has the look of an arthouse movie, the eloquence of a Woody Allen movie and the dynamism of a Hitchcock. I didn't find the movie nearly as predictable as some say. Fairly classic, with scam games being played by the different characters. Joe Mantegna is a fairly underestimated actor and Crouse, director Mamet's wife at the time, also shines in this film.

Directed and also written by David Mamet. With its roots in the theater world, it will not surprise me if the inspiration for this story came from Gogol's play De Gamblers . The sequence in which Lindsay Crouse gets to know the gang is certainly reminiscent of it. The rest of the film is actually in line with this sequence with an interesting twist added to it.

Undoubtedly, the film is also a homage to classic film noir. There is the play of light and shadow in predominantly sepia colored decors. The typical slats that always provide a shady atmosphere. Visually, I thought it might have come across as a bit too clean and artificial. For example, there is an outdoor scene at night at the beginning of the film that is overexposed, which even made me feel like there was acting in front of a screen. Which turned out not to be true, because someone got into a taxi and drove away.
There's the jazzy soundtrack. And then the content. In this case, initially there is not a femme fatale but a homme fatale with Joe Mantegna. The classic gender roles are reversed. It's clear what Mantegna stands for and it's also clear that Lindsay Crouse struggles with the line between good and evil. Her being a celebrated psychiatrist/professor is also in line with Freud's theme in classic film noir. By the way, Lindsay Crouse makes a reasonable masculine impression here with her haircut and clothing (in 1980s style) which also fits with the reversal of gender roles. Well-developed plot where it is crucial for credibility that there is a screw loose with Lindsay Crouse (as will be revealed later).
