A boring premise, but this film still manages to hold your attention. This is of course also due to a number of excellent actors, such as Winslet, Rickman and Tucci, with the latter unfortunately only having a small role. And yet I would rather exchange all those actors for French actors, because of course this film should have been in French. The highlights of the film are the dialogues between the main character and the king, and the main character's conversation with the court women, which was unexpectedly rich in emotions. Visually no more than reasonable unfortunately. 2*.

Nice film about a landscape architect who is commissioned to design part of the gardens of Versailles. The story lacks some focus here and there and the film some spice. Some beautiful scenes (especially the moments between Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman). Good acting from the entire cast and the entire decoration is well done.

17 years after The Winter Guest, Alan Rickman takes the director's chair for the second and final time for this romantic drama in which he plays the role of the French King Louis XIV, who has invited the entire court to a garden party in May 1682 at the Palace of Versailles. The most renowned gardeners submit a design to André Le Notre [Matthias Schoenaerts], who, despite a difficult introductory meeting, chooses Sabine De Barra [Kate Winslet], the only female candidate. André is trapped in a loveless marriage, Louis XIV mourns the loss of his wife [Carolina Valdés], but Sabine also carries great sadness. A wonderful film for gardening enthusiasts, but this has much more to offer. Rickman is completely in his element and shows a king without frills, without frills. These qualifications also match his sober direction, with which he lets the beautiful costumes, the beautiful surroundings and the intelligent, sometimes clever dialogues do their work.
