It's not your standard horror movie. Just because they are cannibals it's horror. Some scenes are intense. But that's about it as far as horror is concerned. It is rather a road movie with romance and sharp edges.

Beautifully acted by Timothée Camalet. A top actor. He wouldn't be able to do that without good counterplay. Taylor Russell takes care of that. Their interplay is enchantingly good. This is further enhanced by the close-ups.

They manage to be sympathetic despite their murderous urge.

Mark Rylance is well cast to play the creep.

The music is extremely functional. Fortunately, no wrought-up trumpet blast when things get intense.

Luca Guadagnino has delivered a fine piece of work.

I couldn't do much with this and the film managed to fascinate me less and less. That world in particular felt just too absurd and was not convincing. We don't get any answers either. And especially the role of Rylance is extremely annoying, as if he doesn't know what kind of movie he's in and therefore detracts from the whole movie. Chalamet is also not super, especially colorless. Russell still does it nicely but can't really carry the film either. Other than that, nice pictures and as a road trip the film is okay. The atmosphere is also nice, with little music and scenes that merge silently into each other, so that they do not feel very natural, but very hard. Crazy. And suddenly the movie is over.

The locations are striking, always some shady places where people live and stay. The Eaters are also often a bit creepy. As if they are a metaphor for something and Guadagnino (or the author of the book) wants to say something with this. But no idea what. 2.0*.
