“I just feel like there are so many things that I could be doing and probably want to be doing that I'm just not.”

Boyhood is an ambitious project. Director Richard Linklater has brought together a group of actors and actresses every year for a number of weeks to shoot scenes for several weeks. The result is a unique film about growing up and growing up, with recognizable situations and dialogues. Divorced parents, the wrong stepfathers, the bond with your sister, your first great love, leaving your parental home, discovering your passions, meeting new people, etc. Everyone can pick out something that is recognizable and symbolic for your own life. And that's the magic of Boyhood, showing the everyday with all its ups and downs.

Coltrane isn't a great actor, but he knows how to make Mason a character you understand. No matter how slow and frustrating he can be at times. Hawke and Arquette are great father/mother, and their characters come out a lot better too. The car ride in which Hawke gets angry about the meaningless and meaningless conversations with his children, and the sex conversation later in the film, remain the best parts of the film for me. The music is also a strong point of the film, and as Mason embarks on a long car ride to his university, with Hero from Family of the Year in the background, the viewer can't help but look back at the past two and a half hours in which you watched Mason grow up and witnessed a unique movie experience.

Insane movie.

Linklater wasn't quite high in my book, but what a movie he delivers here. I think it's nonsense that it takes so long. If you follow the actors for 12 years but there are also results, then I don't mind at all that Linklater takes the time for his film.

Excellent choice too, that 12 years. For example, in a crazy way I often got the wind from the front of the actors I saw an hour ago as an 8-year-old. Crazy how they grow up, especially if you have children yourself, this can feel special. This regularly came across as quite bizarre, where I immediately had to think about the people around me and myself, I recognize the humanity that is in this everywhere.

Linklater proves that there is absolutely no need to throw in those idiotic clichés like bullying, being very successful and then realizing that you are a bad person or something like that. This is a normal life for people who have ups and downs. That's just real, everyday life. The beginning indeed threatens to be a bit standard, but Linklater handles this well.

Especially the thought that the same actors were years younger an hour ago is just crazy. Superbizarre, and then I was actually with open eyes watching how they have changed in character and appearance. The film is absolutely never boring or even too long. In fact, if this had been brought to 180 minutes, I wouldn't have minded either.

I find this impressive cinema, which I have often watched with open eyes. I think it's great, patient and human cinema. Simply delicious.

Linklater drew on his own experiences for this experimental family drama filmed over a 12-year period in which we see Mason [Ellar Coltrane] and his sister Samantha [Lorelei Linklater] grow from playful children to young adults. Patricia Arquette is the mother whose relationships continue to end in disaster since her divorce from Mason and Samantha's father [Ethan Hawke]. A special and daring experiment in every way with a starring role for Arquette (who won an Oscar for her role) and especially strong support from Lorelei Linklater, but apart from a confrontation with Olivia's alcoholic friend Bill Welbrock [Marco Perella] it just kind of lingers on. . Life is a bit like that, of course, but that doesn't make it extraordinarily interesting to watch.
