A film of international class, not many are made like that in Belgium.

The film previously won the prize for best director in Venice in the sideshow 'Orrizonti', it's easy to see why.

Welcome to a world of absent fathers and cleaning mothers. In which young people are left to their own devices (or are expected to solve their parents' problems for them), while adults have a very narrow definition of 'a good conversation'.

At the same time, the young people themselves are portrayed with a warm and very natural look. Credible and recognizable.

Gus Van Sant meets Larry Clark, Elephant (or Paranoid Park) meets Kids (or Ken Park).

What this film does very well is to paint a portrait of a group of young people. A portrait, not a story, although fortunately there are developments. That is also in the style, because Fien Trochs Home does indeed fit in effortlessly with today's visual culture. If you're interested in this culture, I can imagine it's a fantastic film. However, I do not find the group of young people that interesting. In terms of content, Troch is even quite cliché, with the equally taciturn and loyal youngsters on the one hand and a number of adults who mainly try to impose their own ideas on the other. Literally every adult in the movie is stone irritating in this regard, not just John's borderline mother. In this, Home simply doesn't bring enough news. Add some clumsy sex as a mandatory song, no, Troch's manner of delivery is fine, but what she brings here is mediocre at best.
