The turbulent Naples at the end of the last century. When professional gambler Nicole Belecci (Franco Nero) arrives, he immediately finds himself in conflict with Don Gaetao (Fabio Testi), the undisputed king of the slums. When they attack each other with knives, the police intervene just in time and they decide to befriend. Don Gaetano persuades Nicole to join the Neapolitan Mafia, but the latter has trouble adjusting to the ironclad rules of the organization and is secretly studying to become a lawyer. When Lucia (Claudia Cardinale), Gaetano's beautiful mistress, is assaulted by a policeman, Gaetano decides to take revenge. The attack fails, but he is captured. Nicole now takes on the defense of his blood brother...
