Insyriated plot

The story is set in modern-day Syria. The energetic Oum Yazan is desperate for a way to keep her family life together while a war rages outside. The family sits together around a large table in the afternoon and everyone tries to hear themselves above the cannonade of bombs and machine gun fire. There is hardly any water and when they step outside the danger lurks from the snipers on the roofs. While the grandfather plays with his grandchild, the oldest daughter flirts with her boyfriend in her room. A young couple with a baby is staying in the next room. They plan to escape. Then there are threatening sounds. Who's knocking on the door?

Hiam Abbass and Diamand Bou Abboud deliver monumental performances in a flawlessly acted, highly compelling, unforgettable thriller set entirely in an apartment where three families try to survive amid the constant threat of bombing, shootings, but above all, snipers and looters who not shying away from anything to get what they want. Philippe van Leeuw succeeds in making you as a viewer feel what it is like to have to survive in this way. The uncertainties, the constant danger, the fear and the mutual tensions that predominate in this house. But it is the humanity, which is palpable from the start and which emerges in a credible and impressive way, especially after one of the most unbearable scenes of recent years, that makes this film a true masterpiece. Husam Chadat puts on a truly repulsive freeloader in this emotional roller coaster that leaves an indelible mark. Short, but very powerful, the best film of the year with one month to go.

Realistic, claustrophobic film about a family, surrounded by war violence, trying to keep their heads above water. The film mainly focuses on the mother's survival instinct. In addition to the desperation, director van Leeuw also knows how to bring the tense relationships within the apartment into the spotlight. The violent rape scene is hard to digest. Without a doubt one of the better dramas of 2017, thanks in part to the sublime acting of Hiam Abbass and Diamand Bou Abboud.

Still missing opportunities.

The concept is certainly interesting, but the implementation itself leaves opportunities behind. For a remarkably daring concept, the director does not seem to dare to do much, since it is mainly a drama between the families themselves.

But the film does start strong when we see some images on the streets. However, we then get just family drama for our choosing that unfortunately only comes with standard problems and never really manages to captivate.

The first part of the film does have a certain threat with the sounds of violence that are constantly audible, and are also threatening in a sense. It is a pity that we do not see more than those sounds in the end.

So the movie is pretty tame in my opinion. You can say that such a rape is intense, but I found it fairly impactless. Just like the rest, it's all a bit lifeless and impactless and there's a remarkably good order for such a situation, at least that's the feeling I got.

Occasionally a reasonable moment, but the direction is really too soft. Let's see some of the situation. Now I mainly got a "yes, it's very bad, but yes" feeling. Of course the situation is something we should pay more attention to, but I didn't find this movie exactly as a real call.

Acting is good and strong. Everyone radiates something. Some slightly exciting moments and a nail biter towards the end. But then again, that was it for me. It's good that these kinds of films are being made, but I think it could be a little harder, so that there may be a little more impact.
