Les Miserables

I had to get into it for a while and that there is singing all the time (even during normal conversations) was a bit strange at first. But after a while I started to really enjoy it, and I started to appreciate the movie more and more.

Especially after a time jump of nine years is made. Not all actors sing equally well, but fortunately singing is more than just your voice. It's also about how you get it across, your facial expression and the will to perform a song with dedication. Samantha Banks is a gifted singer and when she sings "On My Own" it is really a goosebumps moment. Compliments also for the sets, the images and the courage that director Tom Hooper shows here. Because to make a film in which actors spend three hours long singing takes guts, fantasy and inspiration.Les Misérables has become a daring and ultimately more than successful film.

I've seen many movie versions of this great story and this is by far the best yet. Great what an idea to let the cast sing themselves, nothing else to sing in the roles, that it is occasionally raw and slightly out of tune in my opinion only increases the power of the story which tells about a not so nice period in history, and not just of France. Hugo has succeeded in giving a penetrating image of the time of France and Paris in particular in his story, but to be able to translate that to the silver screen or to the stage, you have to come from a good background, Hooper succeeds as a director with flying colors , the cast really stands out, of course they are not all trained singers, but it is precisely that authentic sound that keeps you on the edge of your seat and that the emotion played is believable, with the role of Hathaway and Jackman's. I take these two out without disrespecting the others but they really carry the film although Hathaway's contribution is short but she makes a crushing impression and when she shows up at the last to watch Valjean accompanying the last trip, that seems completely believable. Crowe might have gotten a little more out of his role if he had acted a bit more flamboyantly, now it was a bit too modest for me. Other notable roles were for Tveit, sublime as he plays a leader of the insurrection, but Barks as Eponine can also be there.
The Paris of the nineteenth century is portrayed in a great way, which has contributed to the high level of the film.
All this together with the masterly music put me on the edge of my seat and made that I was able to completely shut myself off for more than two and a half hours for nothing but the film, I want to see this much more often.

The film that earned Hathaway, one of my girlfriend's favorite actresses, an Oscar. So I suggested this movie several times when we wanted to watch a movie, but until last night my girlfriend always backed down.

After about a minute it became clear to me why: Oh no!!! A musical! Not that I have anything against musicals, but I had seen in advance that there were a whole range of well-known actors who had to sing. They didn't disappoint me with regard to my negative expectations, because they are all very mediocre singers. I read here in a comment that Jackman was a musical singer in the distant past. Well, this film makes it clear why he switched from the musical world to the movie world. And Crowe ... Only Baron Cohen and Bonham Carter are still nice. They have a not too serious role and that singing fits well with that.

It also doesn't help that the music just isn't too strong. [snob] Haven't listened to Wagner in ages, but after the film I spontaneously needed a good dose of Götterdämmerung. [/snob] In any case, if the music is mediocre, those two and a half hours are extra long. It could have been so much shorter, the plot in each song could have been handled in one minute and then you quickly end up with a movie that is three times shorter. Furthermore, visually a lot from the computer and that does not feel natural for a moment, so also disappointing in this aspect.

And Hathaway? It only lasts fifteen minutes, which my girlfriend thought was hardly oscar worthy. And she can't sing either.

In short, it makes me quite miserable. 0.5*.
