Barney (John Ritter), a riotous maverick, returns to Boston after years of absence for his father's funeral. He is received coolly by Elanor (Mel Harris), his genteel brother's wife, whom he has always loved. At the time, partly under pressure from her mother Myra (Polly Bergen), she preferred certainty over the unpredictable Barney. In flashbacks he remembers the turbulent years.
