After their engagement, where he dreams of wealth and power, a big house full of boys, and she of clothes, Peter Marsh marries Beth and their problems begin. Beth is extravagant and Peter becomes irritable, after which they argue regularly. Peter's business is thriving, yet he struggles to pay their bills. Daniel Rankin, a woman connoisseur, sees Beth and stages an accident with her car so he can come to her aid and invite her to a dance. Peter, seeing Rankin trying to win over his wife, then orders her not to go.
