Pretty nice movie, romance combined with drama, growing up and making your own start in life. Miley Cyrus is doing quite well as a rebellious teenager. Not too sweet luckily - although that occasionally comes close, there is always some drama in between just in time. Yet the script is by far the weakest point, there are just too many clichés added. The film would have done a lot of good if it had been just a little less.

The Last Song is exactly a movie that I wouldn't watch on my own, but that I watched anyway for the fun of it. The first half hour was very tough because I was very annoyed by the complete overdose of sentiment. When I later saw that it was a Nicholas Sparks film adaptation, the penny dropped. Anyway, after about half an hour it became a sport to predict what the next turn would be and that was a lot of fun. Amazing how much I was able to predict literally (father is really sick even though he says no at first, father dies while daughter plays his composition, boy returns to father's funeral). Every second of this film screams 'CLICHÉ!'

On the other hand, I do understand that there are people who like these kinds of films. Moreover, I don't want to judge a film solely on the story, although that counts the most for me. Miley Cyrus was not too bad for me (I was actually expecting more of a Disney movie with Miley Cyrus who finds her way back home/father/love through singing) and her character came out pretty cynical at times. Liam Hemsworth is nice to look at, but otherwise he doesn't exactly impress. Still, I think the actors get the most out of the story. I don't like that story at all, and if I had been alone I would have found this film cringe-inducing and maybe even turned it off (which I almost never do). Now I still had a nice evening, but not because of the quality of the film, so I can't give it enough. 1.5 star.

The Last Song

Pretty strong drama film. The acting is decent and the story certainly impresses. I liked Cyrus, although as a rebellious teenager she is better than a little later in the film when the drama is being performed.

Kinnear and Hemsworth are also good and dare I say that Cyrus and Hemsworth have quite a nice chemistry. It's a Sparks movie so of course there has to be a dramatic twist in the story and that will come in for a while. The Last Song is sometimes a bit cliché, but more movies suffer from that. Nice movie to watch once.
