Fascinating film that is carried out remarkably well by the main character. Yet you always wonder which way the film is going now. Is it the complicated mother-daughter relationship? Or having to go through not having a permanent home? Or the kind of curse to make others everywhere jealous with your good looks? Or about coming-of-age and making your own choices? The film chooses a little bit of everything. Not that he misses target in all areas, because partly due to Pfeiffer's strong acting (in an otherwise rather emotionless role), some scenes become charged with tension. But it remains a kind of thriller/drama that does not delve into any side enough to really convince. Which doesn't mean I wasn't interested in watching.

Not terribly bad, not super good, a bit bland. More message than film actually, a bit standard. A few nice roles, but otherwise no Film Where Films Are Made For.

3* so.

Wow what a great movie. This is really my favorite. If you like drama, beautiful music and good acting then you really have to see this film!

The music fits the movie very well and the actors are very well chosen. I also read the book and I really like the movie. Movie adaptations of books are often not recommended, but this film is.

Nice to see Michelle Pfeiffer as a thoroughly rotten bitch.

The contrast with her film daughter Alison Lohman could hardly be greater - primary selfishness versus innocence. Or is that it, there might be more under water.

A beautiful, but also hard and poignant portrait of what is hidden under the messages under the heading mixed news in the newspaper. The receiving side of youth care, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Very strongly played across the board, characters put down without any doubts about authenticity or credibility - real people. And while it's set in America, projecting it there would be a mistake - the same thing would happen to us with great ease. That makes it all the more compelling.

Nice movie, albeit a bit sentimental here and there.
