Ya No Estoy Aqui plot

In the mountains of Monterrey, Mexico, a small street gang called "Los Terkos" spend their days listening to slow-play cumbia music and attending dance parties, flaunting their outfits, quirky hairstyles and gang alliances. Seventeen-year-old Ulises is the leader of this group. Due to a misunderstanding with a local gang, he has to leave the country to save his life. He leaves for Jackson Heights, a colorful neighborhood in the borough of Queens in New York, where he tries to find his niche.

This film is certainly a feast for the eyes. I thought the story was nothing but nice. The acting is variable (Lin's role was a minus, main character Ulises a plus). The story maintains tension through the jumps in time, but is a bit too one-sided for me. The focus on the music is enjoyable and enlightening due to the sad circumstances. However, little remains for, for example, the role of the mother/family. It may be a choice to focus on friends/friend groups/subculture instead of the traditional conflict with parents/authorities. The role of the mother is therefore limited to a few screams, the story of my brother and father is completely underexposed. I understand that Lin turns out to be just a passer-by. The ending brings relief but also sadness and resignation. Wouldn't it have been even more exciting to show more fragments of the friends than just the view on the website? All in all, the ending is strong enough in terms of drama in my opinion. So mixed emotions: I have sometimes been less annoyed by missed opportunities, vagueness broke but still able to travel and ambiguities in a film.

Seen thanks to the promotion by centurion81 here on the site. Ya no estoy aqui knows how to capture the music/dance culture of Kolombiana/cumbia and how this gives an identity to young people who have nowhere else to go in drug neighborhoods. Beautiful, colorful images of the environment and the dancing. As a psychological portrait I didn't like it as much, because protagonist Ulises remains a bit too shrouded in silence. How does he see the rest of his life? What are his dreams and hopes? This all remains unclear and therefore no stronger emotional bond with him is created. The ending, after the credits, gives a positive push to the whole.

Strange film. Because of the slow story, I had a tendency to daydream a bit and to muse about all kinds of things that the images evoked in me. Which in itself is not a bad thing, but I did miss a lot of the story because of it. I didn't understand at all why the boy was suddenly no longer safe, and how he ended up in New York was completely beyond me.
