"The adventure begins."

A young Peruvian bear, with a passion for all things British, leaves for London where he looks for a home. When he ends up lonely and lost at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that life in the city is not what he imagined it to be. But then he meets the friendly Brown family, who read the label around his neck ("Please take care of this bear, thank you") and offer him temporary shelter.

genius.

Paddington is a genius bear. That partly comes from the books of course, but the way this film is made of it does justice to the bear from the book and also gives him a third dimension, with his endearingly cuddly snout. But that's just the beginning - because the whole movie is very well put together, from the voices to the super beautiful bears - take a look at the facial expressions for example. Especially if something with marmalade is coming up.

The regular actors are also a joy to watch play. Sally Hawkins as Mary Brown is the best example of this, but even Kidman with her botox face gets away with it - I can't really see her anymore, but it still works nicely in this film.

But the strongest point is surely the story and the enormous wealth of funny details that are incorporated in it - both in image, sound and narration, and it all fits together nicely. That is very nicely done. It is right that a second part has been made, and you could almost hope for more parts.

With such enthusiastic, lyrical messages as here you expect a slightly higher score, I think. Or is the film - consciously or unconsciously - rated somewhat lower because it is a children's film?

Always thought that Paddington Bear - never saw the cartoon - was such a petit-bourgeois bear, a bland version of Winnie the Pooh without depth, but nothing could be further from the truth. In any case, London looks much more attractive with all those nice colors than in a film like Mary Poppins Returns, which I saw recently. The film never fails, there is always something happening; Paddington gets into all kinds of hilarious situations, but luckily the film never gets chaotic or screaming, which you see more often these days. Nicole Kidman is a miscast, although I really like her Cruella de Vil-esque role as a cruel taxidermist per se. She can't handle this kind of bitchy roles. Too frail and her voice too soft.

Cute and endearing.

One of the biggest surprises of recent years. With a film adaptation of Paddington bear I slightly assumed that this would be in the quality of a Garfield, Scooby Doo or Yogi Bear. In other words; childish interchangeable and clichéd films. Never thought Paddington would be a Wes Anderson for the whole family. The style and creativity in this is amazing, what fantastic shots. This was clearly made by a filmmaker with a very strong vision, something that you don't see a lot with these kinds of family/children's films. In addition to being beautifully shot, Paddington features a range of fun, colorful characters and the title character in particular is extremely touching. And the script is actually very funny. Sure, a few jokes are a little too childish or predictable at times, but for the most part the movie is genuinely funny. But above all stylistically, this is a film to fall in love with. And then the sequel is even more fun. Talk about extremely pleasant surprises!

4.5 stars.
