This is another typical film that I will have to watch again to know exactly how the fork is attached to the stem. I often get distracted during scenes that are full of detective nonsense and even more endless chatter. It turns out that important scenes are important, but I just don't have enough patience to concentrate on them. I have to rely on scenes like that chase in that abandoned cathedral, for example, and not to forget those nightmarish visions with naked ladies, among others. Another scene that made a big impression but not in a positive way was the one with that dissected [/spoiler ] dogs. Kinda tasteless. Party of the Animals, come on in.

It should also be noted that I found this film completely different in style from Fulci's Non Si Sevizia un Paperino (1972) which I I watched it the day before yesterday but I thought it was better.

3.0* with a high chance of revision.

You wouldn't think so at first glance because this film comes from Lucio Fulci, known for his zombie films. After watching this giallo you will discover the characteristics of this director here and there. There are a few gory scenes in the film such as the brutal murder in the dream sequence and the dissected dogs in the laboratory. But this giallo should be more of an ingenious scenario in which the viewer is immediately misled by the nightmares of Carol (Florinda Bolkan) at the beginning of the film. A stylish lady who has hallucinatory dreams about her neighbor Julia Durer (Anita Strindberg) who gives sex parties in her house. The hallucinations are presented atmospherically and the brutal murder is fantastically portrayed in an erotic way by the two ladies Carol and Julia. Many suspects pass by, each with their own motive, such as her husband Frank (Jean Sorel), his daughter Joan (Ely Galleani), two drug addicts Jenny and Hubert (Penny Brown and Mike Kennedy), Carol's father (Leon Genn). It's up to the inspector (Stanley Baker) to find out what's going on. And it is a complex puzzle that he must unravel. The British atmosphere at this giallo is quite nice: beautiful locations such as the castle where the father lives, well-known buildings, the cathedral... The last location in particular is a strong asset of the film where a great chase scene takes place. The final scene may be a bit simple and dry, but I didn't see that twist coming. 7.5/10

The film opens with a powerful dream sequence and that sets the tone. What follows is a mix of psychoanalysis, psychedelics, Hitchcock (The Birds, Vertigo) and Agatha Christie. Visually a gem with strong camera work and top locations. The inventive gore must also be mentioned. The scene with mutilated dogs was so strong that Fulci was allowed to explain it in court after a complaint from animal protection. And there's the beautiful psychedelic score by maestro Morricone.

The storyline is complex and actually makes me want to rewatch it. That certainly wouldn't be a punishment because, as mentioned, it is beautiful cinema. You don't have to rewatch it for the characters. As befits a real giallo, you will not find any sympathetic characters here. Fair enough.
