Flags of Our Fathers plot

"They fight for their country but they die for their friends."

It is February 1945. While victory in Europe is finally in sight, the war in the Pacific rages on in full force. One of the most important and bloodiest battles took place on the island of Iwo Jima. Five Marines and a Navy field doctor plant the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The photo taken of it becomes a symbol of victory. The American soldiers become instantly famous and are used to collect money from the people to pay for the further war.

This film is not a masterpiece, however, which, in addition to the classic battles and horrors of the war, also emphasizes the traumas that linger, the relative concept of "hero" and especially the hypocrisy in the American home front where everything is led into commercial channels and the real compassion has to give way to show.

Also takes a bit of time and is not always very clear with the many time jumps (during, immediately after and much later after the war) and the many actors.

Wonderful film that tells a beautiful story. Also, a great deal seems to have happened in reality and some of it is distressing for the boys who fought in that part of the world to end World War II. Promises made by "bigger guys": 'when this is all over, call me and I'll have work for you'. Indians who thought they would be equated with the white American after the war. All disappointments, it is and will remain so!

Maybe that was part of Clintwood's message with this movie, I don't know.

In any case, the film shows how hard the war is for the people who enter the battlefield and the consequences for the loved ones, families and friends left behind. This film in the "diptych" about the end of the 2nd world war on Iwo Jima, I personally liked the best. "Letters from Iwo Jima" personally appealed to me less, probably because I grew up with English. Japanese often sounds "hard" to me, especially with army language.

Every time after a war film I realize that we are one of the few generations who have never experienced a war firsthand. And also, how glad we really should be for that!

A big 7+ for this film!

I thought this was a lesser film than Letters from Iwo Jima. We are switching back to the "fake" world all this time of war where these heroic, returned soldiers are responsible for fundraising. They are no longer soldiers but media figures. You still see this, just think of football players and other athletes who do marketing for large multinationals such as Coca Cola or Lays Chips. If you understand how the world works, then you actually know that these are not heroes at all. Heroes are the people who make sure that other people have food, who make sure we have clothes to wear, who make sure we have sanitary facilities to wash ourselves, ... and that for alms. Footballers are the biggest scandals of the capitalist system. In fact, they can't do anything (except for some stamping a ball) but they do make tens of millions a year. People who think this is idols or even heroes are just incredibly sensitive to propaganda and brainwashing. I used to love football but the way it is nowadays disgusts me. I don't watch any matches yet.

Clint certainly shows that these soldiers don't consider themselves heroes. On the one hand, they don't think they really deserve it, other than Rene maybe, because they didn't even place the original flag. On the other hand, Ira the Indian just wanted to stay alive by avoiding the bullets. The best marine is killed, he said. Although the morale of the soldiers during and after the war is well studied, I found the jumping up and down annoying for the pace of the film and the story felt fragmented. I was never really overwhelmed, although the message of the film itself is cleverly put together.
