The versatility of director Wise clearly emerges here, not that this is the very best war film, but Wise does manage to deliver a powerful atmospheric film. He is of course helped by classmates such as Lancaster and Gable. The film was made in a period when the technical limitations were great and the special effects were therefore very transparent. But that doesn't detract from the story. The film has clearly looked at the classic Caine Mutiny, to in turn serve as an example for Crimson Tide. Lancaster and Gable both play credible roles and are well supported by the supporting characters. I think the claustrophobic of a movie on board a submarine comes out well, especially during the scenes around the periscope, where they stand man to man, all pretty tight.

Lancaster and Gable use their scenes together to showcase their acting skills, Lancaster sometimes with his pent-up anger and on the other side torn by a sense of duty to his rank and loyalty to the crew Gable with the arrogance of an experienced captain who knows where his limits and those of the crew lie.

I think the only flaw of the film is the beginning, Gable's boat is sunk while the ship is submerged, of course I'm no expert, but I can't imagine anyone surfacing alive.

That doesn't make me rate the movie any higher.

Good film in which a submarine captain gets a second chance after he has lost his ship. A good story and the film also has a good pace. Despite the outdated special efects, still quite exciting here and there. Not the first submarine film, but undoubtedly a blueprint for later submarine films.

Fortunately, I am not alone with a positive review of this film. Despite its age, the film is still perfectly capable of holding the current film viewer(s). Amazing how the actors perform their work!

It's a great set with a good story. The only thing that can be against the film is the black and white version instead of color that was on the rise in those days.

A positive review also has a positive grade: an 8.
