John Ford made this film with a lot of passion and it shows in every millimeter of celluloid. Passion for film, but also passion for American myths. The film slowly but surely builds up to the well-known gunfight at the OK Corral. It is without a doubt one of John Ford's best films and has since earned the designation 'classic' twice and well...

Western classic by John Ford with Henry Fonda as the famous legend and historical figure: Wyatt Earp who figures in various Westerns and is played there by Burt Lancaster, James Stewart and Kurt Russell.

The story is based on real events (John Ford knew the best man) and is quite interesting, although I found it a bit difficult to follow at times (how did Earp become Marshall so quickly?). The actors are fine and the (expressionistic) images of Ford are beautiful, although you have to love them.

However, I found the film to have a pretty heavy feeling from the start which I couldn't place or understand well and that's why it didn't really seem to fit the film. I also did not always understand emotions, which were remarkably present for a western. As a result, a low rating for the time being, although this will of course require a review.

Beautiful work. I am particularly impressed by the photography and lighting, how they perfectly determine the atmosphere of the film. An atmosphere that - despite sporadic outbursts of violence - is on the contemplative side, albeit with a grim edge. As if you get a snapshot of the mythical west within a storyline in which the survival of the fittest is central. Moments such as the dance scene and Fonda swaying in his chair stay with me, in addition to the beautiful views (of course specific to the genre). Henry Fonda is a kind of fragile gallant hero who takes on crooks, with Victor Mature as the ambiguous noir character, with Linda Darnell at his side who also forms a connection between the good and the bad. Cathy Downs steals everyone's heart as the film's darling, although her symbolism - pure constructive power on the Western Front - seems more important than her actual role in the story of this excellent film.
