"ride with the Easy Rider into an action whirlwind."
Three cowboys decide to set up camp in the same valley where a dangerous bandit has just ambushed a stagecoach and killed the guard. The next day, a team of people is sent to the valley to kill the culprit. The cowboys are mistaken for the perpetrators and flee.

The premise itself is interesting and during the last fifteen minutes the film lives up to that, with a satisfying and beautifully filmed ending for me. Unfortunately, mistakes are often made in that first hour, which means that the momentum is lost more than once and the film collapses like a pudding. They try to make a less romanticized western - then I'm always interested - but the urgency of the manhunt should have been present at all times, and that is not the case. Regrettably.

Well-made and well-balanced 'little' western in which Jack Nicholson had a major hand. In addition to the leading role, he also took care of the script and production. It provides a good mix of realism, action and psychology. The emphasis is more on the relationships between the characters than the action and that keeps it interesting. This is a film from the mid-60s and Hollywood is in full transition. This is certainly not a western with traditional heroes. Jack Nicholson and his companions are real anti-heroes who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time and have to run away. The good guys in the story slide into an unsavory gray zone due to their lack of investigation and impulsive lynchings. Chick on duty is Millie Perkins: you can tell from her look that this was made in the mid-60s. Furthermore, for the first time I see an African-American appearing as a cowboy in a western. Another sign of the times.
