Very faint.
What fun they were, the 90s. You couldn't see a movie about hackers without those cheesy animations through tunnels with flickering lights and stuff. Mann must have been a fan too, because he's dusting that mess again. Nice to start a tech thriller like that, nice and modern.
Hemsworth does very poorly as a hacker with a conscience, his two Chinese (?) companions are just as weak. Especially the romance that emerges from that is really hilarious, straight-to-video material.
It's also nice that Mann wanted to make a dry thriller, but he doesn't really succeed. Too little knowledge, too superficial. At times it really feels like it has all come together quickly, as a filler for a video library rack. Visually Mann also knows nothing to bring. Now I've never really been a fan of the man in that area, but this was all very uninspired.
No, halfway through I was already quite bored. Kind of the thriller equivalent of a Seagal movie. Quickly forgotten.

Very good cat and mouse game.
Mann can also handle this quite topical subject, and does so in his own way and knows how to make it exciting and it remains fascinating all along the way. Just scary what some people can do from behind their laptop. We get quite a lot of story and travel to some beautiful locations. Besides many elements that can be found in his films, his films are mainly a character study. So is Black Hat. We get to see a lot of the characters and there is very nice acting throughout the film. And what a beautiful woman Wei Tang is. But Blackhat offers much more than fine characters. As we are used to from Mann, this film is again an audio/visual wonderful. Very nice camera work can be found here. Not only the positioning is very good, but also the movements and lighting are of a high level. It just looks bloody beautiful. But it is also very good in terms of sound and music. The shoot-outs sound great and there is a lot of ambiance to be heard. And then there's the wonderful music of Harry Gregson-Williams, Atticus Ross and Leo Ross.
As with the underrated Miami Vice, I also have a soft spot for the Blackhat. Nicely shot, smooth editing, good sound design and music and exciting action scenes. Story-wise, it's by no means perfect, but it's amply compensated by other elements.
