Good film about a number of old war veterans who get together in a bar of one of them. Rough, raw and a good portion of violence, but brought with a certain atmosphere. It could have been a John Carpenter film. And in that context: better stolen well than badly thought out (because it all looks nice and the cast with some old hands is also nice). A small 3.5 stars.

Nice.

This VFW was a horror film that I had heard quite a bit about, especially since I fall within the audience for which the film was made. A viewing could not be delayed for too long, and recently it was finally time to see this film. It was not disappointing, but also not easy.

This film quickly makes a fairly artistic impression when the bright neon colours float around your ears early. All spaces are coloured with red or blue light and visually the film is worth it. Add to that some strong and bloody gore and you should be very happy with this film. However, Begos does not manage to bring the combination forward ideally.

Especially because the combination of gore and artsy images does not really go well together in this case. It remains constantly dark during this film, which means that many beautiful things remain out of sight. While what is shown can be called quite cool. The blood is allowed to fly around abundantly and the opening makes this clear quickly, so it is a pity that it is often too difficult to see.

There is little wrong with the camerawork or the acting, but there is something wrong with the pace, which ensures that the film has a fair number of moments of slump. The villain of the film is also not very interesting or threatening, director Begos does not really take the trouble to make him an intriguing character. Fortunately, the elderly gentlemen are and that provides some nice scenes.

The film sometimes goes hard and that creates some fun, making the film a mix between light horror violence and scenes with a deadly serious tone, but as a whole it looks just a bit too good to score a failing grade. It's just a shame that the film shows so little due to the too dark lighting and the hasty editing, otherwise this would have been a gem.

John Carpenter himself can't do it anymore and here too a young team can't do it either. Too bad because the expectations were high. Sure a splatter variant on Assault on Precinct 13 that's what you get, but it's not exciting, the characters are one-dimensional, too many red and blue color filters and too little cinematic quality. A weak B-movie in one location with junkies as weak zombies. And the splatter itself is underexposed. Nice to see Fred Williamson and George Wendt again but all those C-movies on VHS in the past were much more fun than most of what is produced for the horror market these days.
