Entertaining Bond film. It's already a lot more campy than the previous four parts (more in line with the later Roger Moore era, apparently), but that does have its charm in itself. I liked the more austere style of Dr. No of Goldfinger is a lot more enjoyable, as far as I'm concerned those are by far the best films of Connery's Bond. But You only live twice so; firstly the location of Japan is quite nice. It's something different. The volcano was also quite nice, although the ending really didn't look like it. Anyway, I noticed that for some reason this part looks a lot crazier and more dated than some of the earlier parts. I suspect it's because this one is a bit more ambitious, a little less hay on the fork might not have been bad. And after five films of build-up, I found the appearance of arch-enemy Blofeld quite disappointing. Mediocre performance and effect.

But in general the film never gets boring (except during that strange Ninja training and the even weirder fidelity), there are constantly entertaining scenes, the soundtrack is quite nice and Japan knows how to convince as a location. 3*

It all starts with making fun of a beautiful piece of America. Also a nice story with 007 who goes undercover as a secret agent... nice scene also with that mini helicopter, it also has a bit more humor and action than the previous films, again a higher budget that can also be seen. It is also nice to see that it revolves around a theme that is current for that time, the space race.

A more relaxed bond is portrayed than in the previous films. Personally, I also think the locations are very beautiful, in that respect another top Bond film. I always wonder how people must have experienced this in the 60s, with no internet or travel programs on TV.

Integrating into Japanese culture should have been left out for me. Somehow it doesn't quite fit into the movie.

Nice detail is that Musk got his inspiration for his SpaceX rockets from this film.

Although entertaining, it is the least so far in the Connery series, despite the interesting influence of another culture, in this case Japan.

The introduction of Blofeld is nice, the cool portrayed hijackings in space are beautiful and should especially be seen in the time frame, the Thunderbirds-like base is nicely rendered, the final attack is fine and the situation with Little Nellie is entertaining. Not to mention a fine title song by Nancy Sinatra and further soundtrack.

However, You Only Live Twice is mainly lacking in a few things in the script produced by Roald Dahl. Stronger that such a huge base can be built without anyone from the local village noticing it, especially the volcano eruption at the end, nice to build your base there, far from safe seems to me and the biggest flaw the why as far as the hijacks are concerned. An attempt to unleash a nuclear war between Russia and America, but for what purpose? And...the lack of a real Bond babe as a final and minor flaw. Mie Hama can be called nice but that part of the film is also disappointing.

It makes You Only Live Twice a lesser film than the previous ones, but no less entertaining.
