Pretty insane.

Unbelievable that this is the work of mainly one person, who didn't exactly have much film expertise before. But very creative, and that is apparently enough to deliver a complete stop-motion film, even if it takes 7 years.

It reminded me a lot of Nihei's Blame!, also names like Tsukamoto, Lynch, Cronenberg that pop up every now and then. And Giger of course, for the creature design. The plot is fairly limited, but for a sci-fi/adventure like Junk Head that doesn't really matter. The nice thing is that you get to discover a great world together with the main character.

Also props for the soundtrack, dub and sound effects, also completely done by Hori herself. A feat, I was very happy to hear that he is now working on a sequel. One of the coolest films I've seen this year, and for a film where expectations were already quite high, that's quite something.

Big 4.5* and a extensive review

Fat!

What a wonderful video. Now I'm already a big fan of the stop motion genre, but the world that Takahide creates here is fascinating. A bit of Dune/Tatooine vibes, but a lot more menacing, chaotic and of course with a much bigger wink. That wink makes the film not only a feast for the eyes but also downright hilarious. Now it may be a bit too late for this film to reach a large audience, but the humor should make it more accessible for many.

Apart from the great world building, the creature design is also top notch, what wonderfully bizarre creatures Takahide Hori has created. All unique but also recognizable.

Audiovisually it is also a great celebration. The editing is smooth, beautiful camera work, and the soundtrack is nothing short of sublime. Everything really complements each other perfectly. No wonder it took so long to make this film. An absolute masterpiece.

5*

Impressive dystopian stop-motion animated film, very well designed, especially when you realize that this is largely the work of one man, director Takahide Hori. It's unbelievable what he managed to put together. The plot doesn't amount to much but is entertaining enough; What makes the film so enjoyable, in addition to the beautiful images, is the understated dry humor and the fun characters, who are often unexpectedly very funny. Towards the end things start to drag a bit and the abrupt ending is a shame, but by then this Japanese work has already more than proven itself.
