Once again enjoyed this gem from Miyazaki. As we are more used to with these Ghibli's is the fine drawing style and beautiful subdued music. The planes look really beautiful, very accurate and with a lot of attention to detail. As always beautiful images from the air with wide landscapes, detailed dreams and weather elements.

The plot is beautiful with the looming WWII in the background, which also includes a beautiful romance. Very moving at moments such as the moment that Jiro holds the hand of his sick wife. It is also interesting to see the historical context of the building of Japanese war planes, in other words to be able to form a picture of it. You will be immersed in an atmosphere of technical ingenuity and heroism.

Exactly what Darkwood and eRCee say: hard to digest, this 'The Wind Rises', although the plot is an interesting and in the West opens a lesser-known page of Japanese history, circling the question: how did the intellectual elite relate to the announced global conflagration? There are hardly any answers, but Miyazaki manages to nicely portray the atmosphere of an imminent loss of the fatherland through the figure of Tachinu's other half. Was the crumb of society so captivated by progress that it ignores its main raison d'être (love!)? Le vent se lève - behold, evil forces unite! - il faut tenter de vivre - and what does this intensified life mean, retiring as a chamberlain, or, on the contrary, making choices that go against the immediate intuition of self-protection and privilege? Anyway, fodder for long winter evenings, isn't it...?

3*

The Japanese grandmaster (My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) has raised the bar so high that this biography of aviation pioneer Jirô Horikoshi [Joseph Gordon-Levitt] which is disappointing. Miyazaki's choice to make a film about the designer of the planes used by the Japanese during their kamikaze attacks during WWII doesn't exactly lend itself to the poetic animation style, but there are plenty of memorable moments to satisfy the master's fans.
