Girl with a Pearl Earring plot

"Discover the mystery behind the legend."

Griet, a 16-year-old girl, becomes a maid in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer. Her calm and expectant attitude not only helps her in the work she does, but also attracts the attention of the painter. Despite their different backgrounds and upbringing, they view things the same way. Vermeer slowly involves her in the world of his paintings: the calm depictions of women in a domestic environment.

Special interpretation of the world famous painting. The images of 17th century Netherlands both outside and inside are breathtakingly beautiful. The characters are indeed not very deepened, but found that in this film not disturbing, and perhaps even appropriate, given the work of Vermeer was central, and the subdued, focused atmosphere lent itself perfectly for that. The whole time I felt like I was walking through a museum in awe. The tragic ending was just enough drama not to ruin that atmosphere.

Tried this one and thought it was a great movie. Even though there wasn't much of a story, it still captivated me. The cast was also well chosen and convincing.

It was a bit of a shame that they didn't speak Dutch, but it wasn't disturbing.

Furthermore, it looked authentic and the extras on the DVD were also worth seeing.

I certainly didn't regret it and thought it was worth seeing.

Revise again. The story is of course paper thin and is also pure fiction and yet it feels a bit strange that the language is English. The only positive thing about this is that the painting might get a little more international attention, although I don't know if the painting really needed that.

So the plot is not much. Not much more than some hidden tensions and some romance. I think much less is known about the life of Vermeer himself than, for example, Rembrandt, and this film does not really offer any new insights. He is also quite mysterious in this movie.

The only thing that is nice is that, even outside the painting scenes, there is sometimes a shot in the film that is reminiscent of a painting by Vermeer. 1.5*.
