Angst Essen Seele Auf plot

In a bar, the 60-year-old widow Emmi meets a much younger Moroccan guest worker, whom she conveniently calls Ali. The two get along and Emmi takes the man home. And now that they live together, they decide to get married. But that's not to the liking of Emmi's racist son-in-law, as it is to the incomprehensible outside world...

Fassbinder derived the idea of a relationship with a large age difference from All That Heaven Allows (1955), but without the sentimentality and the guiding background music . To make the contrast even greater, he turned the man into a Moroccan guest worker. The lonely widow wants company; the guest worker wants better housing.

The two lovers are often shown from a distance, through a doorway or through a window or banister. This is the point of view of the disapproving spectator. The two feel watched and judged by society. Spatial distance is used to evoke a sense of "us" against "them". Yellow and red are widely used, among other things as colored light in the cafe. Yellow can symbolize jealousy; red for passion.

It's a social satire. Some misguided remarks suggest that Hitler is still being fancied. The grocer and Emmi's sons have a Hitler mustache. The other maids initially judge their colleague, but come around when they need a strong man. When they grope Ali's biceps, he is suddenly their huggable Moroccan, while the Bosnian woman is left alone on the stairs as their new victim of exclusion.

Brigitte Mira plays the role of a lonely widow very naturally. Fassbinder has cast himself as the lazy son-in-law. El Hedi ben Salem is both the actor's name and the real name of his character. The grammatical error in the title is a quote in its faulty German. "Anxiety isst die Seele auf" would be correct.

A very captivating Fassbinder. Fascinating and sad at the same time when a native older lady enters into an amorous relationship with a younger virile Moroccan man. The racial difference is something that their environment does not accept and their age difference has not made it any easier just look at the jealous woman who feels shortchanged in the cafe.

I thought the plot progressed very quickly. I expected a little more depth when the relationship started. They barely knew each other and they were already in bed. And the marriage proposal was not long in coming. It is possible that their motives (loneliness and acceptance) played a role. What follows is a beautiful interplay of their relationship as a couple, their uncomfortable restaurant visit was touching. The dismissive looks and negative reactions cut through the marrow. They became pariahs. Racism was everywhere, clear and subtle.

Also interesting was the further development of their marriage and the fact that Emmi also unknowingly committed racism. In the long run she ignored the negative reactions, she even minimized them, the small fight over couscous or the uncomfortable scene as a cuddle moroccan, ... you could feel Ali's disappointment in the living room.

Very strong roles from both protagonists. Also a nice intervention by Fassbinder himself as a lazy racist son-in-law. Nice disguised sentences also from Ali, nice to follow so that you immediately find a solution with the beautiful title "Angst essen Seele auf". Beautiful! Thick 4.0*.

Very nice film by Fassbinder. An elderly widow and a young guest worker, both lonely souls, find love and build some happiness together. In doing so, they have to fight against discrimination and social disapproval that still seem like echoes from the Third Reich. Later in the film we see hypocrisy again... when the same assholes need Emmi, there is no longer any talk of evil. The best scene for me was this one where two ladies come to visit Emmi and talk about Ali like he's a pet while he's standing by. Anxiety Essen Seele Auf is a bittersweet social fairy tale with fun dialogues, appealing characters and an honest look at how strange people can sometimes be.
