“If you want love, then this is it. This is real life. It's not perfect but it's real.”

Linklater, Hawke and Delpy have created a unique trilogy with the Before films. The combination of lifelike dialogues, the wonderful chemistry between Hawke and Delpy, the aspect of checking in every nine years to see how the characters are doing and the set (Vienna, Paris, Greece) makes you feel like old friends yourself every viewing. who you haven't spoken to in a while.

Midnight is a bit sharper, harder and less romantic than its predecessors, but therefore realistic. Jesse and Celine have been living together for nine years and have twins, so it's no surprise that the tone is different and the romance a bit less. There are also big decisions to be made. Are we moving to Chicago? Will I change jobs? Are we still happy? During the car ride (unparalleled scene) we immediately find out how the two went and where they both stand in life. You can feel something brewing between the two throughout the film and the hateful jokes get more and more vicious. In the hotel room this comes to a beautiful outburst and I was astonished to watch the reproaches that the former ideal couple shout at each other. The dialogues are again unparalleled, and with Greece a beautiful setting has been chosen. The ending scene is great, and hopefully we'll see Celine and Jesse again in 2022.

Funny how taste can change. In 2014 I gave Before Sunrise a 2.5*, where as far as I can remember the semi-philosophical conversations didn't really interest me and I didn't really feel the romance yet. Now I've reviewed it and watched the other two movies for the first time and they are instantly among my favorites.

Individually I would give all three a 3.5* but as a whole in the trilogy they are so good that that is too little. The combination of the conversations, the romance and the atmosphere/locations with the chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy is special. And how the trilogy then follows them over the years is of course unique.

As for this last movie, this felt very tragic if you just rolled out of the rosy first 2 movies. The romantic tension has given way to a negative tension that I constantly felt between the two. Then you suddenly find yourself again in the sometimes bitter reality.

How it will continue between them is up to the viewer's imagination. In that regard, I am very curious about the possible sequel that is being discussed. From what I've read, that shouldn't come until well after 2022.

Jesse [Ethan Hawke] 9 years ago – at the end of Before Sunset – deliberately missed his plane to the US to stay with Céline [Julie Delpy]. Married nine years later, they have two daughters (twins) and are vacationing with friends in Greece with Hank [Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick], Jesse's son from his previous relationship. When Jesse has to say goodbye to his son at the end of the holiday, it is so hard for him that he tries to carefully poll Céline about a possible move to the US. That is the premise for the conclusion of the Before trilogy in which there is room for other characters to have their say. Although that also provides some interesting insights, it also seems to be a sign that the formula has become a bit jaded. The chemistry between Hawke and Delpy is still there, but their conversations (and arguments) are a bit more superficial, making this the least of the three films.
