Interesting piece of Russian history that I never knew existed like most. Well, corruption and covering up events that are not in line with the communist ideology, that's what the Russians or rather Soviet authorities have always been good at. This film gives a good picture of that. However, as a drama, this film falls somewhat short. Mainly because of the unbelievable happy ending.. That could have been left out. Other than that the film is quite ok although I'm not that enthusiastic about the black and white photography.

A film from the Soviet era with a certain historical value. The communist apparatus is running at full speed and citizens and workers must be in line. Nikita Khrushchev may not have been physically present, but his mind was all-seeing, judging by dozens of overzealous officials who enforced the rules strictly and unrelentingly.

They were equally efficient in the scene where the rebellion was nipped in the bud and the bloodied streets were literally washed away with fire hoses and sweeping brushes.

It becomes interesting and fraught with a moral dilemma when former front-line soldier Lyudmyla sees demonstrators shot in an attempt by the government to cover up the demonstration. ... Among those protesters also Lyudmyla's daughter, who went missing during the shooting. The film provides a penetrating and gripping portrait of the facts and events that preceded it and how people tried to cover up the massacre. Lyudmyla then stands at the crossroads and has to weigh up which way to go. Strong!

Unfortunately I don't know enough about the wider history with the background of this film. Khrushchev may have brought a different regime after Stalin's death, but it was certainly not a good time for many Russians who died of starvation. Previously I could nip such protests in the bud in secret, but in Novocherkassk things got out of hand and this would gradually herald the end of Khrushchev.

The film is in black and white and takes you straight to Russia in the 1960s. You have to think about the background, but at the same time this is also something that has happened elsewhere. The protest is growing and the carnage is coming in nicely.
