Beautiful film about a hard-working man and father who supports his family in the mid-1950s. Clearly based on a play, but despite the considerable length it never gets long-winded. Naturally constructed scenes and the father/son, and man/woman relationship come out well, where you slowly get to know the main character better. The superb acting delivers some strong and poignant moments.

What strikes me is that the Dutch film audience on MM are often a bunch of ant-n**kers given the figures and especially the commentary on films.

Not everyone of course (so don't all feel addressed ) but often the same accounts here on MM, pay attention... it seems terrible to me to have to watch movies like this, when can you enjoy and empathize with a movie question I wonder then.

With my grades 9 times out of 10 I'm pretty close to the IMDB average....MM is often below this average... so probably I'm not that critical and I enjoy the movies more...no idea but it just strikes me.

This film: Top... excellent acting by all parties, including Denzel who shows that he really belongs to the greats in the film world. Viola D., however, was excellent and rightly received an Academy Award, but Denzel would certainly have awarded it.

I knew it was a movie from a play, so I kind of knew what to expect. The beginning with Denzel's semi-monologue immediately shows this, fantastic and very believable. Gabe was also fantastically portrayed. The ending left a lump in my throat... that last scene... beautiful!!!
