Kongen av Bastøy plot

A Norwegian winter in the early twentieth century. On Bastøy, an island located in the Oslo fjord, lives a group of young delinquents, between the ages of 11 and 18. The boys are subjected to a sadistic regime by the guards and the director in which they are abused both mentally and physically. Instead of being educated and educated, they are used as cheap labour. The boys try to survive by adapting to their inhumane situation. One day a new boy, Erling (17) arrives on the island. He has only one plan: escape from the island.

Grim film, with strong acting, and an icy setting. Initially rather slow with a typically depressing Scandinavian arthouse atmosphere, in the denouement the film takes on more sensational American traits. Fortunately, it doesn't really disturb, and the film (despite the plot is not very original) certainly leaves some impact.

Rock hard disciplinary school drama, which does not leave you unmoved, especially by the continuously grim atmosphere. Resocialization as an excuse for child and power abuse.

A very strong film with a horrifying story and excellent acting by the mainly young cast. Heavy food.

I saw the similar Danish Der Kommer en Dag (2016) two years ago, but because he appeared on TV last weekend, the topic back to top. There the comparison was made with the well-known Sleepers (1996), but also with this Norwegian version, so I absolutely wanted to see it.

Not in terms of plot - not at all - but in terms of atmosphere and mysticism, I did think of Scorsese's Shutter island a few times. The island is gray and rough. The hanging fog, cold, snow and dark gray clouds convey something ominous. A youth institution was built in this setting. In terms of real abuse, it was not that bad to be honest, if you color within the lines. Corporal punishment is of course out of the question, but I had imagined something like the top film The Magdalene Sisters (2002) although resocialization and purification also play a role here of the body and mind. Striking was the immediate depersonalization with the address of the boys as a number.

The film has some twists and when child abuse is established, the youngsters take into their own hands. This film offers a strong story with a beautiful cast, atmosphere setting and decor. Skarsgård plays an outstanding role as director of this disciplinary institution. Good looking!
