I've seen a lot of movies with Travolta, but this is definitely his best performance ever.
He does indeed play like Ajax&Litmanen1 well named an annoying, selfish pretty boy in short macho. But I do think he does this in a good way.
He can also dance very well.
I did notice that the film is a lot less light-hearted compared to Grease.
the film includes a rape scene

“I'll dance with you, but it's not like you're my dream girl or nothin'.”

“You want a dream girl? Then go to sleep and have a nightmare.”

Very popular movie in the 70's and I can see why. Saturday Night Fever doesn't have to rely on the story or the highly developed characters, but that's not what it's about at all. The 70s atmosphere, the disco era, the music, the dance scenes, the clothes, Travolta's walk, etc. These kinds of things make the film so popular. The music of the Bee Gees was perhaps even more popular than the movie itself, and the interplay between Travolta and Gorney is excellent. Especially in the dance scenes, the chemistry splashes off the screen. Saturday Night Fever is a product of its time, but also timeless at the same time.

An atmospheric film that is better viewed as a time document than as a dance film. The escapism in particular is strikingly portrayed. These young men and women have little to fall back on and no promising future ahead of them. What remains for them is superficial pleasure and short-lived fame.

Each character cares about what others think of him or her. Travolta's character focuses on his father and wives, his ex focuses on him, and his friends also seem to ask for his approval. Time and again it becomes apparent that these characters want to be seen, want recognition from the people they have placed on their pedestal. And that is something that many people (especially young people) will still identify with.

The whole macho, misogynistic and homophobic atmosphere doesn't bother me for a moment. This film is about a slum in New York, and the characters simply depict this street culture. I think it's appropriate and it also shows their limited view of society very well.

It seems pretty useless to judge that with 2022 glasses. Art should, in my opinion, be judged in its original context. In addition, I strongly suspect that the average youngster still has the same ideas, which again shows that the makers have hit it so well. The behavior of this group is not praised anywhere, the film burdens the viewer with judgment.

The film drags a bit to the end, but a true classic. And man, that Travolta can dance. The scene where he takes over the floor on his own is really fantastic.

3.5*
