Well, too bad I lost my money, because this poor western really wasn't worth it. This is an example of how boring and watery a western can be. The film is filled with completely uninteresting dialogue and barely developed characters. The most interesting part only comes in the last half hour, after I had almost dozed off between a prolonged love story of two times nothing and constantly incomprehensible actions. Why does Nicholson insist on living next to that gentleman farmer for months to take revenge? Why doesn't Nicholson shoot Brando in that tub? . That movie is at least half an hour too long.

Marlon Brando can help improve the quality a bit, as a somewhat crazy mercenary, who is much more dangerous than he looks. The beautiful shots of the vast landscapes in Montana are often breathtaking, but unfortunately that is not enough to elevate Missouri Breaks to a good western. Nicholson and Brando together on the silver screen, that seemed like something... it didn't work out.

Mediocre western in which the owner of a ranch uses a hitman to get rid of his cattle thieves. The film's biggest asset is of course Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson. Jack Nicholson gives a good role, but Marlon Brando is sometimes a bit annoying with his accent. The film looks good, but a number of comedic moments do the film more harm than good. However, the biggest problem is the story which is simply too boring. The characters are also not really well developed.

Who is Thomas Jefferson?

- Guy back east.

I didn't think this western was that bad. Well, crazy may not be the right word here, because Marlon Brando's somewhat absurd role is not an insignificant one, but the film is far from bad. I did have to get used to Robert E. Lee Clayton (Brando). Both his personality and his name raised my eyebrows at first, but over time I came to enjoy his idiosyncratic character and his somewhat strange way of acting.

Besides Marlon Brando, I had never seen Jack Nicholson in a western before, but it is clear that he is a worthy opponent. As Tom Logan, the leader of a group of cattle thieves, he makes quite an impression. This also applies to Jane Braxton (Kathleen Lloyd), with whom he develops a special bond. A bond that creates some tension in the film because her family actually suffers a lot from Logan's actions. Reason enough to engage a so-called 'regulator', the aforementioned Mr Clayton. He just has to arrange to put an end to all the disagreement that has arisen.

This is followed by a manhunt that culminates in an interesting confrontation towards the end. A confrontation that, in my opinion, is going a little too smoothly. The man who used to be so inviolable and who worked very expertly is suddenly very easily fooled. He loses his invincibility so quickly that there is little credibility left. So little that the remaining confrontation is completely strange and unbelievable.

The film may be called The Missouri Breaks, but the beautiful vast plains of Montana, where the film was actually shot, steal the show. The attention paid to the beautiful pictures has its effect and the result is impressive. Together with the good roles of Brando and Nicholson, this ensures that the best part is fun to watch, although the rest of the film is not exactly memorable.
