Just saw the extended cut and unfortunately I can only conclude that the original version is clearly superior. The extra hour of material largely consists of more coming-of-age from Jack, while also making the characters of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain more flesh-and-blood people and less archetypes. It wouldn't have happened to me. Many new scenes are long drawn out and seem redundant. An exception to this is the scene with the tornado. Thematically, it fits well into the film, but especially the views of the tornado itself are impressive. I have rarely seen natural violence portrayed so beautifully.

Make no mistake about it, everything that makes The tree of life the best movie ever is also in this version. But then with a lot extra, resulting in significantly less impact. Still a must for the real enthusiast. The rest would do better to watch the original version (again).

Watching planets, volcanic eruptions with some religious quotes in the background, which must be so-called deep sense. Beautiful images, but if I want to see nature I turn on BBC earth. Didn't even look at me.

Pseudo-intellectual posturing imo

Jack [Sean Penn] still feels the pain of losing his younger brother. Flashbacks show fragments of the brothers' childhood, showing the influence of their stern, domineering father [Brad Pitt] and their much milder mother [Jessica Chastain] on their lives. But Terence Malick wouldn't be Terence Malick if it weren't more than a series of snapshots (nicely filmed, that is) and that he tries to disguise the superficiality of the story by adding all kinds of things. But what the hell do dinosaurs have to do with this? Recently watched the movie again at double speed and even then it is unbearable! Even worse is the 188-minute version, which doesn't even deserve one star.
