Meh.

Paul McGuigan has already made something better than this lukewarm 'horror' spectacle. The well-known story is not very innovative. James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe form a duo that does not appeal to the imagination. I miss my own stamp, let alone any entertainment.

Mediocre.

You're actually doing something wrong, or maybe something really right, if you can get Radcliffe to sign to play the part of Igor. I often find that the more popular actors are more likely to be thrown into roles that show them the most intimidating and charming side. McGuigan does the exact opposite with Radcliffe.

The result is a film that at first feels like a kind of false dream. The cast is still doing their best, but I don't often see names being cast in such wrong roles. No one really feels right for this film. McAvoy is mostly too boring, Radcliffe too exaggerated and that Freddie Fox was already quite uncomfortable to behold. Again, the problem isn't the acting, but the attitude that doesn't catch on at all.

Everything else is nicely decorated. Lots of detail, quite large set pieces too. The sad thing is that this isn't very interesting either. Besides the fact that the pace is mainly too low, there is simply too little to experience. The horror is never properly mixed with the drama aspect or the thriller aspect. This often makes the film feel uncomfortable and out of place.

The finale, where the film has to let go of the brakes a bit, doesn't impress either. Especially the final could have saved it a bit, but this didn't happen. The film really doesn't cut it in any way. Not dirty, not bloody, not original, not exciting and not atmospheric either. It looks fine, probably mostly because of the pennies, but it doesn't catch on. I can't say it's a disappointment, but it's a movie I'll soon forget.

Since most film adaptations of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' are quite different from the book, it is not surprising that this version tells the story from the perspective of Igor, Frankenstein's assistant. Igor [Daniel Radcliffe] is a circus clown with a lump on his back and a fascination with medical developments that devours any book on the subject. When trapeze artist Lorelei [Jessica Brown Findlay] falls during her act, Igor helps the assisted doctor Victor Frankenstein [James McAvoy] to save her. Victor is so impressed with Igor's knowledge and insight that he decides to involve him in his efforts to bring dead tissue back to life. Victor's obsessive attitude, combined with some failed experiments, explains why his colleagues don't take him seriously at all, but it reinforces Victor's unwavering belief in his own abilities. Radcliffe leaves Harry Potter far behind and McAvoy has a great time as the outgoing, boisterous Frankenstein. The film also looks fine, but anyone expecting a radical retelling of the famous story will be disappointed.
