Waarom Wettelen plot

Her foster son also shows up at Christine's funeral, a man who had been estranged from the family for some time. He has a letter stating that Christine wants to be buried in Wentelen. This news comes as a big surprise to the family members, as does the fact that he continued to keep in touch with his foster mother. Nevertheless, Christine's last wish is respected and the family also decides to travel to the place on foot. It will be a trip of several days, allowing plenty of time to get to know each other better.

The directorial debut of author Dimitri Verhulst. Verhulst is mainly known for his idiosyncratic oeuvre such as Godverdomse dagen op een godverdomse bol, Problemski Hotel or De helaasheid der dingen. The latter two were also subsequently filmed, not without success by the way.

For this film Verhulst apparently also worked with the Van Warmerdam family as co-producers. Well, it shows. Not yet the razor-sharp great style that Alex has, but you do feel that Verhulst is still searching and certainly has more up his sleeve.

Why Wettelen? - the film title alone, has become a wayward, idiosyncratic film, a parody and with the necessary satire. Slightly absurd too. All usual and traditional (cultural) behaviors are thrown out. Dating during a funeral ceremony, why not? Light and entertaining. No bursts of laughter, but that amiable smile. Not everything is equally successful and I was curious in advance how he was going to entertain the audience for over 100 minutes. He certainly succeeds in that. No Oscar material of course and not at all perfect, but Verhulst is on the right track to develop his own style with a bit more metier. It can therefore easily be a bit sharper. Great already!

Christine is just in her grave when notary [Bert Haelvoet] appears and informs her relatives that it was her last wish to be buried in Wettelen. Only Frido [Dominique van Malder], the driver of the hearse, knows where Wettelen is and widower Bas [Peter van den Begin] decides that the funeral procession must make a few days' walk to honor Christine's last wish. This fact is a stepping stone for a series of incoherent sketches. Verhulst has a few promising ideas (including attending a wedding and staying at a bankrupt circus), but the execution is mediocre and Verhulst keeps the pace slow enough to kill any joke. If you can laugh at the funeral speeches during the prologue, you might think differently about this. Kudos to De Voil Majoretten for 'Den Tettendans' (a cheesy parody of 'Tu-Es Foutu' by InGrid) and the camel.

This film is bizarre to the core, but the build-up of absurdity carried me along. You may not always take the drama seriously because of the humor that comes completely out of nowhere, but it also kind of highlights it. Why Wettelen? is a special melting pot, but I think it absolutely works. Read my full review here.
