Walkabout plot

"A boy and girl face the challenge of the world's last frontier."

A 7-year-old boy and his older sister are left alone in the outback of Australia after their father's almost surreal suicide. While trying to get back to civilization, they encounter a young Aboriginal on 'walkabout', a traditional wasteland retreat with spiritual significance. Although the three youngsters try to make contact, they fail to bridge the cultural divide. Yet their lives will be changed forever.

Excellent film about a teenage girl and her little brother who have to survive in the desert. An original film in several respects. The somewhat idiosyncratic editing at times, a number of impressive images of people and nature, the beautiful music of John Barry. More than enough beautiful pictures of the Australian landscape. The director's son also plays the brother here.

An unnamed brother and sister unplanned find themselves in their own hazing ritual. With the sun as their orientation, they should move eastwards. Overwhelming shots of the desert, with red sand, magnesium rocks and azure sky, make them look insignificant. They meet marsupials, dromedaries, cockatoos, parakeets, snakes, scorpions and ants. They eat lillypilly berries. The beauty but also the cruelty of nature is shown. Spear-killing animals is part of the natural course of the food cycle, but white hunters shoot water buffalo for entertainment.

Communication between the two cultures is difficult. The child makes contact with sign language. The Aboriginal saves their lives by letting them drink groundwater through a straw. It does not come to a complete bridging, because she reacts negatively to his mating dance.

With crosscutting Nicolas Roeg makes connections between Western and traditional culture. The opening scene juxtaposes the hum of a didgeridoo with the din of the traffic jams in Sydney. The montage jumps back and forth between a crawling lizard and a riding Beetle, or between a water pistol and a real firearm. The chopping of a kangaroo is interspersed with images of a modern butcher. The present is punctuated by flashes of memory, reminiscent of the Aboriginal Dreamtime.

Jenny Agutter had an English boarding school accent and a short skirted uniform. Some explicit images sparked discussions with rating committees. They didn't have to look far for the boy, because that was the director's son. David Gulpilil would show up in quite a few Australian productions over the next few decades.

What a beautiful gem this is that simplicity has been beautifully put together by beautiful heavenly music, later somewhat contemporary landscapes and the many known and unknown animals in the out back of Down Under. And even then kangaroo meat was eaten. Speaking of food, those who suffer from a weak stomach or are a member of the party for the animals should skip this film.

The interplay of the young actors is good. The little wise boy. The older sister who later played in many films (known for example from The Eagle has Landed 1976) and the aboriginal who had to discover himself at the age of 16. Hence this name is a household name in Australia Walkabout. Towards the end it weakens a bit but there is still enough beauty left. Just don't get that suicide maybe someone can tell me. The ending was not for me. Kind of like a flashback memory. Anyway a little gem, Walkabout will certainly remain.
