The favorite has become my fourth Lanthimos. I was really looking forward to it, because I did become a fan of Lanthimos after his rather strange productions like Dogtooth, The lobster and The killing of a sacred deer. No movies usually for the general public. Neither is this The Favorite, although the latter does not fall within the genre of the aforementioned films. On the contrary.

The favorite has become a beautiful costume drama where I enjoyed every second of the excellent camera work and the very beautiful sets that created a strong atmosphere for the film. In addition, you have three sublime acting performances by Olivia Colman, who plays a very unstable indecisive English Queen Anne. Rachel Weisz is the manipulative, domineering lady-in-waiting Lady Marlborough. The latter faces competition as the favorite lady-in-waiting from an equally strong Emma Stone as a renegade lady of nobility who is gradually gaining the trust of the Queen. An Oscar nomination is certainly in it, presumably for Colman. And this film can also score highly in the other categories.

What makes the film very strong are the spicy and witty dialogues. Sometimes a bit brusque, but just as subtly humor is woven into the dialogues and the script. The role of the always drunk-appearing Queen Anne is also not strange to this. The subplot - in addition to the amorous approach - about the war with France remains fascinating, as does the growing feud and dislike between Abigail and Lady Marlborough. Excellent film and I also had the impression that the rest of the audience could enjoy the film. Good!

Cinematically, this is already a work of art (the ingenious, expanding camera, the sets, the splendor of colours, the entire editing...), but after a while you also get dragged into the story, or should I say into the game of the three ladies at court, their ambition, their subtleties, their venom.

Colman ran with an Oscar but Rachel Weisz and certainly Emma Stone deserved it just as much.

Sharp dialogues and a satirical, mocking look at the customs and habits of the time, in multiple layers of the population (the chicken run as the culmination of mockery of high-ranking functions).

Yorgos Lanthimos knows what cinema is and does not shy away from reality and fantasy.

Delicious delicious. What a score folks. In any case, it is always good to include the organ, king of instruments, in your score (in terms of sound it could have been a bit more robust, but okay). Visually it is also a pleasure: nice wide-angle shots at the strangest moments, lighting fantastic, decors also top notch. Lanthimos even manages in one scene to tell two different moments simultaneously with dissolves and asynchronous sound (when Stone starts picking herbs), which made my mouth fall open in surprise. Never seen. In terms of content, I liked The favourite to follow, with the continuously changing balance of power. The three female protagonists play chess with the male secondary characters as if they were pawns. The drama is slightly less penetrating than with The killing of a sacred deer, but Lanthimos has also landed on a track in which I think he will make many top films.
