Nice film by Mann, which I still had a good time with. The first part of the film is very standard, but fortunately the last thirty minutes of the film are very well put together. It's a shame that the film too often emphasized the romance of Daniel Day Lewis and the English officer's daughter. For all this I would have awarded 3.0 stars if it weren't for the fact that I really love the soundtrack of this movie. It's really fantastic at times, so I give the film an extra half.

3.5*

Wonderful adventure film with a sublime Day-Lewis and Stowe. Rarely seen so much adventure, action, passion and romance in one film. Beautiful music and excellent camera work too. Actually a film that would not be out of place in my top 10 of all time.

How many times have I started this movie and fell asleep, distracted by something else, zapped through. Unending. It took thirty years to get the title role. It might be an interesting exercise for a film student to count the shots that have no narrative content or cinematographic value, with the special category 'people walking through a dark forest'.

The actors don't make it for me either. Day-Lewis, for example, plays flats. Stowe groans a bit. Only Studi comes anywhere close to the intensity you need for this story, and May has a scene where it looks a bit like it. In any case, only the last half hour or so can be watched without yawning.

Soundtrack and action I didn't find that interesting either, cinematographically it is all very dull and uninteresting. And especially too much dark forest. In fact, the only thing that does work is the language - especially the very poor French.
