I saw this film as a small child in the 1970s with my grandmother on a German TV channel. Even though it has been a long time since I saw this film, I can still remember a few things. At the time I thought it was a fascinating, fascinating and also an exciting science fiction film. The story was well put together and when the ants (I found them quite scary at the time) started to sabotage the laboratory it became exciting. I also thought it was genius when the lakes with structures focused the sun's heat on the laboratory. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly how the film ended. But because this film has still stayed with me, I will still cast a vote.

Special film, partly due to the documentary style in the beginning and certain nature shots during the film. The fascinating images of the ants also provide a realistic representation that sometimes makes you as a viewer feel more like you are in a documentary than the genre film itself imagines. But gradually the feeling fades because you become more connected to the three main characters and how they try to deal with these hostile ants. Big compliments for the technique, the patience of the recordings and the appropriate music. 7/10

The poster of Phase IV is a lot more spectacular and explosive than the actual film, but graphic designer Saul Bass can easily be forgiven for that. Partly thanks to his extremely patient and experimental directing approach, his debut film (and also his only film) is regularly provided with a special, but impressive atmosphere. The visual quality of the film is particularly striking, with Bass regularly coming up with images that look particularly modern. The poor acting of both Michael Murphy and Lynne Frederick is unfortunate, but part of this is due to the extremely poorly written dialogue. This sometimes makes Phase IV feel like a very smart film that is talked together by a clumsy farmer, but that should not spoil the fun. Personally, I thought the first 10 minutes as well as the somewhat mysterious ending were very well chosen and the general approach was very fresh. However, it is clear from the first minute that a film like this is not for everyone.
