Far too many archive images, models in a bathtub, storms in a glass of water. Lots of stars with famous names, but barely a second of decent acting - from the cardboard Charlton Heston to the tin soldier Toshiro Mifune. Sad to see them bumbling like this. Dated, yes - this tinkering can safely be forgotten.

I think this is by far the worst war movie I've seen. Only interesting because of the story and history. But you might as well just read it on wikipedia. There are also some interesting photos of the real ships and Midway Island - the film has only fakes to offer.

It's always fun to watch these kind of war movies. As usual it starts with a lot of chatter (you know, I actually missed the first half hour) and ends with spectacle. Somehow I like how the war situation is explained slowly but clearly. both the army top and the ordinary soldier are discussed. I also didn't think the drama with the Japanese girlfriend was very strong and added too little, but that was just a blemish on the whole. Fortunately, the action is a lot more fun to watch. The 'freshly shot' war scenes are hopelessly outdated, but there is tons of authentic (colored) footage that makes the film a lot more lively. The burning ships are quite impressively depicted.

It is a film that is presented more as a documentary than a story. Today, war movies are much more about personal drama, while Midway tells grittily what happened during the battle. Partly because of this, stars such as Charlton Heston and especially Henry Fonda hardly come out of the picture. Real pawns on a large playing field.

Take strategic discussions, actually too much to keep it really interesting, or you must be an avid fan of sliding warships and such. Moreover, the protagonists left a worn-out end-of-career impression and those archive images came across wooden and clumsy.

An exceptional plus was that they admitted to having been lucky in the battle, although Churchill had to add an absolute tribute to the heroes.

Was expecting more.
