A film you will soon forget.

Jolie is right on the edge so as not to get too sentimental. But it also doesn't go so far that it really makes an impression. The true story is of course a fantastic starting point, but is just a bit too easy to handle. A lot of moments that aren't strong enough. Other moments are, the moments in the plane in the beginning and when they float around were especially well done.

Furthermore, it is very solid and in terms of acting I have not seen much special except in the physical area. Gleeson is very good by the way. On a technical level not really seen much. Well it is very good. Deakins does shoot some nice shots, but I've seen better of the man. Film does its job but fails to impress in the right way.

Despite being fairly close to the characters, the movie felt quite distant… like you were watching scenes that happened to others. In other words, you were never IN the story. It also lacked layering. People mainly remained 2D characters. Remarkable in itself that this story that you expect more from a man like Spielberg, ended up with an Angelina Jolie. At the time, there was a lot of resistance to the release of the film in Japan. In the book (which forms the basis of the script co-written by the Coen Brothers) many worse things are described than was/could have been shown in the film, including cannibalism and burning prisoners alive.

The most impressive scenes are the beginning of the film (B-24 Liberators) and where 'Pizzanetti' has to perform heavy physical forced labor under the direction of 'Goog' or 'Geek'...

A bit too long-winded and therefore a 3.5☆ instead of 4☆.
