Still a very intense follow-up season, as the focus shifts from the fragmented reality of an ex-death penalty inmate to the tensions and entanglements between him and the other family members. Aden Young as Daniel Holden is still the greatest asset of the whole (God bless, that man can act: modest, expressive and physical, sensitive, threatening, etc), but the other characters also take on a more interesting psychological charge. Especially in the last four or five episodes, it becomes an explosive web of conflict, opposing interests and lurking secrets. At the same time, Daniel has also become a more complex figure, who - whether he proves guilty or innocent - harms himself and others because he makes far-reaching choices in the aftermath of his trial. The symbolism is a bit too much and false sentiment is lurking, but 'Rectify' (2014) deftly manages to circumvent well-worn genre conventions. The series raises philosophical dilemmas about good and evil that you rarely see addressed in more action-oriented television series.
